Chevy Volt Now $7,500 Cheaper, Thanks to Economic Bailout

The bill passed by the House 263 to 171, and is certain to be signed by Bush. What this means to future Volt buyers is what’s called the Transportation and Domestic Fuel Security Provision.
This provision provides a tax credit for buyers of plug-in electric vehicles and provides a base of $2500 plus an additional $417 per kwh for batteries greater than 4 kwh. For the Chevy Volt, that works out to $7500 per car.
But act quick, the credit will be applied to the first 250,000 plug-in cars sold in the US and will be phased out to 50% for the following two quarters, and 25% for the two quarters after that before ending. The total cost of the credits will be $758 million.

Tax credits for plug-in’s a done deal
Will a Prius plug-in qualify?
Tax credits for plug-ins are now a done deal, as the President has promised to pass the bailout bill that Congress has now approved. Plug-ins with at least a four-kilowatt battery pack will qualify for a credit ranging from $4,168 to $7,500 depending on the number of kWh’s in the battery pack.
It is know that the Chevy Volt will qualify for the entire $7,500.
Originally, Toyota was against this bill, but the company seemed to change its tune when the kWh battery requirement was reduced. So, it appears plug-in hybrids, such as the Toyota Prius, will also qualify for this credit.

2007 Porsche 911 GT3 RS

The GT3 RS is a Porsche 911 for those with no fear. We didn’t get the 996-series GT3 RS, but Yankee speed freaks soon will be able to flog the 997-series follow-up. The RS is lighter than the already svelte GT3 thanks to the use of carbon fiber for the car’s hood panel and its adjustable rear wing. Wider rear fenders like those from the 911 Carrera 4 cover the RS’s increased rear track. Sharing its 415-hp flat six and six-speed manual gearbox with the regular GT3, the RS will be offered with black or silver paint as standard, but buyers can pay extra to have their cars sprayed in funky, 1970s-style shades of orange or green. The 911 GT3 RS hits the track in early 2007.

Paris 2008: Venturi Volage revealed!
Filed under: Emerging Technologies, EV/Plug-in, European Union, Paris Motor Show
As previously promised the wraps have come off the Venturi Volage at the Paris Motor Show. While Michelin may have been a collaborator on the revealed electric GT, one glance leaves no doubt it belongs to the Venturi family. It not only shares the carbon fiber body of its sibling, the Fétish, but it will also be lovingly hand-assembled in limited quantities at the same Monaco atelier. Styled by Sacha Lakic, the smooth-bottomed Volage is said to be “designed by subtraction” with its carbon fiber skin fitting tightly around its innovative technology.
And speaking of technology, each wheel on this car holds 2 electric motors! That’s right, the “Michelin Active Wheel” system uses one motor for to drive a reduction gear that is also inside the wheel while the other handles the active suspension. All controlled by “spearhead electronics,” the Volage can readily adapt to different road surfaces and driving style. Batteries for this electric car are 45 kWh worth of liquid-cooled polymer lithium and are said to provide for 320 Km (199 miles) of driving pleasure at a “stabilized” 90 Kph (56 Mph). The car is capable of getting you to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds and tops out at 150 Km (93 Mph). The car will begin its limited production run in 2012 and the price goes unmentioned. If you have to ask…
Check out the gallery below for a shot of the inside of those cool wheels and hit the jump for the full press release.

2007 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Edition

Yes, that’s right, the SLR hasn’t exactly been selling well. What’s that, you say? You mean, if you had $452,750, you wouldn’t go buy an automatic-transmission-equipped Mercedes—no matter how cool and pimpy and McLaren-built it was—either? Us too.

Yes, you read that right. Only a couple years after their debut, BMW’s 325i and 330i four-door sedans are slipping out the door with nary a wave goodbye. Taking their place are the 328i and 335i four-doors-powered by a 220-hp, normally-aspirated 3.0-liter six and a 300-hp, twin-turbocharged six, respectively. The 328i engine is essentially a differently-tuned version of the 325i/330i’s six-cylinder, while the 335i sedan’s engine is identical to the one found in the just-released 335i coupe.

2007 Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione

If this big red chunk of hotness looks familiar, it’s probably because you’ve seen it before: Alfa unveiled a concept version of the Competizione at the Frankfurt show in 2003. That look-but-don’t-drive concept pretty much blew everyone’s minds (the headlights look less bugeyed in person, we promise). A year later, at the 2005 Pebble Beach Concours, Alfa pulled the wraps off of a roadster version of the car. It too was gorgeous.

2007 Porsche Cayman

The new Cayman (minus the S) is not the lightest, cheapest, or cutest Porsche, but it may be the smartest one to buy. What the 245-hp, 2.7-liter flat six lacks in low-end vim it more than makes up in 7300-rpm vigor; lighter engine internals and electric throttle response hurl a heavy-footed operator to 60 mph in less than six seconds on the way to 160 mph. The stout coupe body and mid-engine layout are the ideal serving tray for the chassis engineers’ most inspired work. And a base price that’s barely over $50,000 means that “value” and “Porsche” can share a sentence. Upgrades–such as a six-speed manual, sport seats, eighteen- or nineteen-inch wheels, a navigation system, active dampers, and the Sport Chrono Package–are dear, so don’t linger too long over the options list.

In 2010, Hyundai will finally begin selling hybrid cars in the US. The Hyundai Sonata is scheduled to be the first hybrid to hit US shores.
More interesting, Hyundai plans to sell the Sonata hybrid as a lithium-powered hybrid vehicle that should increase fuel economy by 70 percent. LG Chem will provide the batteries.
Hyundai plans to sell 50,000 Sonata hybrids in the first year, but the automaker wants to quickly ramp up hybrid production to 500,000 hybrids - including other hybrid models - per year by 2018 according to AutoWeek.

The Land Rover LR2 will step in early next year for the late, unlamented Freelander. The LR2 is powered by Volvo’s new 3.2-liter in-line six, which will make 230 hp and 234 lb-ft of torque. The transversely mounted engine is hitched to a six-speed manu-matic. Four-wheel drive and LR3-style Terrain Response system are standard. Inside, the five-seat SUV comes with keyless ignition, an oversize sunroof, and power seats. Options include navigation, swiveling headlights, and Bluetooth. Safety is enhanced by standard stability control with rollover mitigation and front, side, and side curtain air bags, plus a driver’s knee air bag. We’re eager to see if the LR2 betters its predecessor as much as the LR3 did the Discovery. The 911 rollout continues not just with the higher-performance variants but with the new Targa as well. As 911 fans know, the Targa concept has changed somewhat since the model first appeared in 1966. Where the early cars had a removable roof section over the front seats, more recent models have an all-glass roof and a power-operated sunshade with a front section that slides rearward. The 2007 Targa continues with that setup, and it also has a hatch-opening rear window that provides a second way to access the cargo hold behind the front seats. What’s new this time is that the Targa will be offered exclusively with four-wheel drive and the wider, flared-fender body style. The Targa 4 gets the standard 911’s 325-hp, 3.6-liter flat six, while the Targa 4S packs the larger, 3.8-liter engine and an additional 30 hp. As before, all 911 Targas have pointed rear quarter-windows, helping the cognoscenti pick the Targa out of the 911 crowd.

BMW wins ÖkoGlobe 2008 award for thermoelectric generator
Filed under: Emerging Technologies, BMW

BMW has won an ÖkoGlobe award for the second straight year. The award was presented to the Bavarian automaker for its work on a thermoelectric generator. Um, what’s that? Basically, using a process known as the Seebeck effect, electricity can be generated by a difference in temperatures. All right, fine… who cares? Under the hood of every car ever sold that has an internal combustion engine, a huge amount of heat is generated while the engine creates power to drive the vehicle. In fact, only about a quarter of all the energy released by the fuel’s combustion is utilized in even the most efficient engines. Therefore, there is a great source of untapped energy already in each car on the road. BMW’s researchers and engineers would love to tap into that unused energy with a thermoelectric generator, which could help capture some of that potential energy in the form of electricity that could then help power either the car directly or at least some of its peripheral systems. Very cool, and we hope something good comes from the research.

What road to greener transportation?
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.–The route to a less polluting car looks more like a multipoint intersection than a single superhighway, a panel of experts said on Wednesday.
The auto and fuels industries are in the midst of dramatic technological change, but it’s still not clear how quickly which new technologies will be adopted.
Also unknown is whether consumers are willing to switch from traditional car ownership to the “transportation as a service” model where people share a fleet of clean cars dispersed around a city.
The EmTech 2008 conference, held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, put together a panel to discuss green transportation with Tesla Motors Chief Technology Officer JB Straubel, BP chief scientist Steven Koonin, and Ryan Chin, a student at the MIT Media Lab involved in the City Car and RoboScooter projects.
All of them agreed that there’s a need to shift from today’s fossil fuel-based transportation industry because of concerns over energy security and climate change. But it’s unlikely that one single technology will displace the gas-powered internal combustion engine.
“You have to ask whether change will be revolutionary or evolutionary. If I had to bet, I’d say it will be evolutionary,” said BP chief scientist Steven Koonin. “The most likely scenario is a plug-in hybrid with a very efficient engine powered by biofuels–with plausible technologies.”

Chrysler’s “Gated Community” Pea-Pod Electric Car

When I was a kid, my buddy Carl’s parents had a golf cart. It was a small blue one with outdoor carpeting on the floor boards. Open to the sky with a freshly charged battery and it begged to be driven, and oh boy, did we drive it. The only thing that could have made that day better would have been if the golf cart had been a Chrysler Pea-Pod.

And although Chrysler’s famously ordinary mid-size Sebring sedan fails to make us wet ourselves with glee, the Avenger concept–which was reportedly been built on the 2007 Sebring’s platform–at least exudes some excitement. Dodge claims that the Avenger “hints at the next-generation global D-segment vehicle from Dodge,” but we’re fairly sure it does more than “hint.” Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter diesel four; that engine will likely be offered outside North America shortly after the production car’s launch.
